SSND Calendar Facts

Oct. 1 - Mother Caroline Friess became a true American pioneer, crisscrossing the country by wagon, boat and railroad, establishing schools and shaping the congregation. Upon her death she was honored as “a blessing to the Church in America.”

Oct. 2 - Sister Antonina is one of the 108 World War II Polish Martyrs of Faith beatified June 13, 1999, in Warsaw, Poland by Pope John Paul II. She died on Oct. 2, 1942, one week after being released from prison.

Oct. 13 - In 1847 Father John Neumann helped to start the SSND motherhouse in Baltimore and three schools in which the pioneer sisters could teach. He took Mother Theresa and Sister Caroline on a trip as far West as Milwaukee and offered them several schools, including one at St. Peter, Philadelphia, where he is buried.

Oct. 15 - Mother Theresa Gerhardinger, Foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, put all her strength into furthering God’s reign. She began her life trusting in God and ended her life’s journey seeing that trust fulfilled in the flowering of the SSND community.

Oct. 21 - Alix LeClerc in 1597 began a religious order in France. Mother Theresa Gerhardinger was influenced by her in founding the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1833.

Oct. 23 - Mother Georgianne, original leader of the Dallas Province, was General Superior of all School Sisters of Notre Dame and friend of Sisters around the world.

Oct. 24 - SSND came to life this day when God’s call found an answer in Theresa Gerhardinger, “a woman strong in faith, farseeing in vision and courageous in action.” (You Are Sent)
